
英国剑桥大学出版社与中国五洲传播出版社在北京正式签署图书版权引进协议(摄影 郭研)
5月20日,英国剑桥大学出版社与中国五洲传播出版社在北京正式签署图书版权引进协议,一次性从五洲传播出版社整体引进“人文中国”书系30本图书。此次签约不仅成为剑桥大学出版社425周年重大纪念活动的组成部分,也表明“中国图书对外推广计划”的加强版“中国文化著作翻译出版工程”正式开端,对中外出版界具有标志性意义。
“中国文化著作翻译出版工程”是中国政府今年隆重推出的一项新举措,旨在以更大规模、更多投入、在更广领域支持中国图书“走出去”。目前,中外出版界正在积极策划选题,组织出版更多可以纳入该工程的项目。
“人文中国”书系的引进方——英国剑桥大学出版社,是世界上历史最悠久的出版社,也是世界最大的学术与教育出版机构之一。其出版的鸿篇巨著《剑桥中国史》、《中国科学技术史》等在国内外享有很高的盛誉。
“人文中国”书系的输出方——中国五洲传播出版社,是一家极其年轻的出版社,只有十几年的历史,以对外出版为主业。每年以各种文字出版近200种图书,涵盖中国历史、文化、社会、艺术、文学、经济、旅游等领域。立足于向国外读者介绍中国各方面的基本情况,同时也将国外优秀文化成果介绍给中国读者,目的是“让世界了解中国,让中国了解世界”。经过十几年的发展,“五洲”已成长为一家新兴的国际化出版社。
此次向剑桥大学出版社转让版权的“人文中国”书系是五洲传播出版社自2003年起陆续推出的一套高品质重点书系。截至2009年5月,已出版23本分册,并将在2009年内出版其余7本。经过不断整合创新,整套书系30本书已形成比较完整、系统的三个专辑(每辑10本),即:以思想、智慧、艺术为主的“无形遗产”专辑、以工艺和器物为主的“有形遗产”专辑和以衣食住行乐为主的“民俗生活”专辑(详细清单见附件)。三个专辑精心架构,有机结合,通过各分册介绍的各种文化载体和文化现象,勾勒出中国文化的一个总体面貌。
“人文中国”书系每个分册的作者都是中国相关领域的专家,对该领域的历史文化背景知识有着准确的把握和独到的见解。他们了解中国文化,并站在世界文化的高度来解释中国文化的独特之处。在他们的笔下,中国文化不再是古老、神秘、遥不可及的代名词,而是充满了活力、乐趣和智慧,和普通人的生活息息相关。“人文中国”书系集知识性、趣味性和通俗性为一体,读者可以从中获得中国文化知识,了解到中国人的思维方式、价值判断和社会观念,从而对中国有一个更全面、更系统、更深入的认识,也同时享受到无穷的阅读乐趣。
“人文中国”书系自推出以来,得到了业界同行和广大读者的认可,尤其受到高学历读者的喜爱,销售业绩可观,在短短几年内已多次加印,总销售量已接近100万册。此外,“人文中国”书系还通过中国驻外使领馆向190余个国家和地区发送,并经常作为国家礼品被赠送给外国政要、国际友人和海外文化机构,获得高度评价。其部分版权也已转让到中国台湾地区和日本、韩国、俄罗斯、匈牙利等国家。
此次“人文中国”书系版权的成功转让,不仅是因为该书系的高品质,也证明了剑桥大学出版社的战略眼光,更得力于“中国文化著作翻译出版工程”将该书系纳入资助范围内。今后,“五洲”将继续策划出版更多适于外国读者阅读的图书,争取更多品种的图书走向世界。

The Cambridge University Press (CUP) signed a book copyright license agreement with the China Intercontinental Press (CIP) in Beijing on May 20, 2009.
According to the agreement, CUP shall import 30 books of CIP’s “Cultural China” book series.
The move was made as part of CUP efforts to mark the 425th birthday of CUP and the official launch of the “Project for Translation and Publication of Chinese Cultural Works”, which is the enhanced version of the “China Books International” (CBI).
The “Project for Translation and Publication of Chinese Cultural Works” is a new move made by the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) and the State Council Information Office (SCIO) in 2009 to encourage foreign publishers to purchase Chinese book copyrights. Many Chinese and foreign publishers are working for strengthened cooperation in this regard.
CUP is one of the largest academic and educational publishing organizations with the longest history in the world. Previously, it has published the Science & Civilisation in China and The Cambridge History of China, which boast a high reputation both in and outside China.
CIP is a young press established in 1993. Each year, it produces some 200 new titles in different languages. They include books, periodicals, albums, postcards, CD-ROMs and E-books about China’s culture, history, society, arts, literature, economy and tourism. Today, CIP has grown into one of China’s promising international publishing groups.
The “Cultural China” book series, one of the most high-quality book series of CIP, was launched in 2003. It comprises 30 books published in three volumes (eaching containing 10). Volume one - “Intangible Heritages” - focuses on Chinese philosophy, wisdom and art; Volume two - “Tangible Heritages”- focuses on craftworks, technologies and utensils; and Volume three - “Folk Custom & Human Lives” - focuses on people’s clothing, food, housing, healthcare and entertainment (please see the Appendix for the details).
By May 2009, 23 books of this series have been published in Chinese, English, and some other languages, and the rest of seven books are forthcoming this fall.
The authors of the book series are famous academic experts in their respective field. All of them are steeped in the Chinese culture and history, and share the global horizon of human civilization. Given the fact that some think the Chinese culture is “ancient, mysterious, and reachless”, they wrote to show the Oriental culture is full of “vigor, fun and wisdom”, and “inseparable with people’s daily life”. Readers will find them enjoyable in reading.
It is expected that publication of these books will help the Western world gain a broader, deeper, clearer, and better understanding of the Chinese culture, as well as the thinking mode, value and social conception of Chinese people, a boon for reduced misunderstanding that existed between Westerners and Chinese.
In 2004, two books of this series, Chinese Calligraphy and Peking Opera, won the Outstanding Prize at China’s Sixth National Book Binding and Layout Fair. Also in 2004, the “Cultural China” series was given the first prize at the Sixteenth Hong Kong Printing Fair.
Thanks to the rich knowledge they contain, and their readability, the “Cultural China” book series were welcomed by both domestic and overseas readers, especially the readers with a higher education background. Since its launching, both the Chinese and English editions of the series have been reprinted several times, with the total circulation reaching 1 million. The same period also saw the “Cultural China” book series are used by the Chinese embassies and consulates in more than 190 countries and regions as gifts to many foreign friends and cultural organizations. The Chinese Taipei, South Korea, Japan, Russia, and Hungary have purchased the rights of some titles of this book series in the last two years.
